Liz Conces Spencer

Liz Conces Spencer draws from abstracted human, natural and cityscape forms, speaking to the
realization that all life is interconnected and mutually interdependent. Intrigued by the visual tangle
of urban/suburban life, she has embarked on a lifetime study of figures and patterned landscapes,
crossing media lines from traditional painting to printmaking, sculpture, mixed media works and
glass.

Liz grew up in the refinery town of Pasadena, Texas, earning her B.A. in Art at the University of St.
Thomas. A Winant Clayton Volunteer in 1975, she developed an art program for underprivileged
children in London, and taught for several years at Houston’s St. Thomas High School and
Incarnate Word Academy. She conducted workshops for students and teachers for the Museum of
Fine Arts-Houston, the University of St. Thomas, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, the City of
Richardson, Texas, Aldine ISD and the Houston Arts Partners annual conferences. In 1999, she
received project funding from the Cultural Arts Council/Houston, now Houston Arts Alliance, for her
work with youth at Wesley Community Center. She has conducted hundreds of workshops,
residencies and programs under the auspices of City ArtWorks, Young Audiences of Houston, the
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and Project Row Houses. She was the Visual Arts lead in
Young Audiences’ 2021 Arts for Learning professional development initiative focused on arts
integration in the schools. She is currently enrolled in the RAISE Program, which endeavors to
reach students through Social Emotional Learning-imbued lesson planning.

Liz served on the governing boards of City ArtWorks and Archway Gallery, and she is a cofounder/
producer of the White Oak Artists Collective and The Heights Artisan Market, providing
sales and performance opportunities for visual artists, artisans, musicians and authors. She is the
moderator of life drawing sessions held weekly at Archway Gallery.

Freelance design work in the infant industry led to her internationally marketed line of infant soft
goods in the 1980’s. Until 1995, she was art director for a manufacturer of licensed products for
Gerber Childrenswear, Looney Tunes, Binky, Crayola and the World Wildlife Fund. She created,
licensed and owns copyrights to over one hundred published original designs in this industry. Her
20-year career in the advertising industry for giants McCann-Erickson, Ogilvy & Mather and J
Walter Thompson afforded valuable experience in corporate broadcast business management and
production.

Illustration projects include a research text published by Oxford University Press, and numerous
works for small businesses in and around the Houston /Galveston area.
Working solo or with frequent collaborator Gene Hester, Liz has completed commissions for the
University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Camp Aranzazu in Rockport,
Texas, The City of Houston, Silver Eagle Distributors, Cool Globes, The Houston Arts Alliance,
Talento Bilingue of Houston, The Morgan Welch Inflammatory Breast Cancer Center, Houston
Congregation for Reform Judaism, Lamar Towers Residential Community, The Weingarten Art
Group, The Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston, The Kroger Company, and Service
Corporation International. The City of Houston acquired her work “Path Through Blue Trees” in
2021 for its Airport Art Collection at IAH.

Liz lives in Houston with her husband, musician Michael Spencer, their parrotlets Walter and
Ruthie and Taco, an adopted feral cat.
