Judy Malone-Stein
Growing up in the oilfields of East Texas instilled the patterns, smells, sounds, and sights of
rural living into my soul. When I began mentoring children (and them mentoring me), I
discovered the childlike eye for wonder instilled within me and my learning process. It was as
familiar as the land I grew up in, and I never saw art as anything but an extension of that, even
as an urban artist.
When commissioned to design, I hear the patron's desires and interests and, through the
process, merge them with my love and style. I would describe my style as a folk art with an
appreciation of naïve art. My love of organic materials and resourceful artistic styles that
incorporate them without discrimination nourish that process.
Currently, this passion leads me to foreign lands to study the root techniques of masters, some
of whom are folk artists. While theater stills excite my senses with a fast-paced urban lifestyle,
I feel a deep latent desire to have a more organic order to life. Art evolves similarly to nature,
vegetation changing to overcome man, and birds' songs changing to be heard. Both art and
nature underlie everything.
