John Keahey
Raised in Northern Virginia by parents Billy M. and Elizabeth W. Keahey. Three older sisters;
Susan Keahey Heeter Keahey in West Virginia, Elizabeth Keahey Rice in Virginia and
Katharine Keahey Lovas in Dallas, Texas. During childhood through high school resided in the
Washington, D.C. area in Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax, Virginia. Attended public schools
in those areas.
Education:
Awarded a B.S. Degree in Geology with a minor in English and United States
History from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, Williamsburg, Virginia in 1972.
Awarded an M.S. Degree in Petrology from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut
in 1976.
Vocation: Worked as a petroleum geologist for various companies beginning in 1972 until
1995. Resided in Oklahoma City, New Orleans and Houston. Was given various awards for
excellence by employers and professional societies, including Most Valuable Employee Award
from Occidental Petroleum in 1994. Attained the rank of supervisor in both exploration and
production aspects of the industry.
Became self-employed in 1995 and founded my own company making reproduction clothing
and artifacts for museums and individuals; and speaking on historical topics to schools and
other history based organizations. Currently still doing this work.
Avocation: Attended first Living History reenactment in 1961. Began competitive shooting with
Civil War era black powder weapons in 1964. Delivered my first historical school presentation
in 1964. Participated in the American Revolution Bicentennial from 1975 to 1983. Began
making my first reproductions during this period. Acquired and began restoring a 43’ sailboat
in 2008.
Personal Life: Married Joan Anderson Dykes of Houston, Texas in 1981. Son Pelham
Anderson Keahey was born in Houston in 1987. Pelham was awarded a B.S. Degree in
Physics from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas in 2010. He attended Rice
University and received a PhD. in Interdisciplinary Applied Physics. Joan Keahey retired in
2014 from a long and successful career as an executive secretary and geo-technologist
